Demand for NY Gay Marriage Licenses Overwhelming

by Beverly A. Pekala on July 21, 2011

Same sex couples who want to marry in New York this weekend will have to enter a New York lottery and hope for the best. So far the demand for licenses has been overwhelming. Over 2600 couples have applied for marriage licenses so they could marry on Sunday, July 24, 2011,  the first day that gay marriage will be legal in New York .

The New York clerk’s office said they just can’t manage all those marriages in one day. Therefore, the clerk’s office came up with the lottery idea.

Couples will find out tomorrow whether they’ve won a lottery ticket which will allow them to be married Sunday.  The total number of marriages which the clerk’s office will conduct on Sunday is 764.

Mayor Bloomberg has announced that he’ll officiate at the marriage of his two long-time aides at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the Mayor.
