Though the state assembly has passed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage, it is widely expected that Governor Chris Christie will veto the bill.
The Governor and many Republicans lawmakers are proposing that gay marriage be put on the state ballot, while Democrats say gay marriage should not be put on the ballot, arguing that it is a civil right.
Six states and Washington, DC, now recognize gay marriage. The State of Washington passed legislation which will take effect June, 2012 which will then recognize gay marriage.
