Today Could Be The Day

by Beverly A. Pekala on June 20, 2011

Supporters of gay marriage have just one more day to call on their lawmakers to pass a bill legalizing gay marriage in New York . The New York legislative session ends today, as the House and Senate begin their summer recess. Last week the measure approving gay marriage passed 80-63 in the House, and it appears that the Senate remains one vote shy of passing the bill.

Controversy continues as opponents of gay marriage continue to ask their representatives to vote down the legalization of gay marriage. Various organizations, including Latinos United for Marriage Equality, have voiced concerns that the legislation does not provide sufficient protections or exemptions for religious groups and others opposed to same-sex marriage.

New York would become the sixth and most populous state to allow gay marriage approved by lawmakers.
