Why Should Employers Care About This Law?

Of course, many citizens, including corporate citizens, care about this law for a whole host of reasons. However, all employers are required to care about the law because, just as with other laws, they don’t have a choice.

The Illinois Civil Union law affects every employer in Illinois.

This includes everyone from sole proprietorships to partnerships, C corporations, S Corporations, PC’s and LLC’s. In total, that’s more than 1.1 million businesses. Whether you have two employees or two thousand, whether you have gross receipts of one dollar or one billion, the civil union law applies. There are no exceptions for “mom and pops” or anyone else.

To comply with the law, all businesses must closely review their employment policies, guidelines and benefits and make the necessary changes. The two primary areas of focus are health insurance and retirement benefits, which are obviously complex and require legal counsel.
