It’s Official

Yesterday Illinois issued the first licenses for civil unions. It’s estimated that over 200 licenses were issued in Cook County alone, which included at least two licenses to heterosexual couples.

Today 30 couples will participate in a commitment ceremony held at  Millennium Park in Chicago, near the corners of Randolph Street and Michigan Avenue .  Mayor Emanuel and Governor Quinn are scheduled to attend along with Cook County Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy Evans and members of the Alliance of Illinois Judges, a gay and lesbian judges’ organization.

Cook County Clerk David Orr will officiate, as will Circuit Court Judge Tom Chiola, reportedly the first openly gay judge elected in Cook County , in 1994.
