President Obama Supports Civil Unions

by Beverly A. Pekala on June 24, 2011

Last night President Obama attended a fundraising event in New York City and spoke about the ongoing debate in New York over gay marriage. Mr. Obama said, “I believe that gay couples deserve the same legal rights as every other couple in this country.”

The President supports civil unions but has stopped short of endorsing gay marriage, a source of frustration to gay rights advocates including those who each paid $35,000 to attend last night’s event.

While President Obama is credited with striking down the Defense of Marriage Act and repealing ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,’ his failure to publicly support gay marriage remains an issue amongst many of his supporters as the 2012 election approaches.
